Kanata at the steering wheel wearing a radio headset.

Kanata Rivington arrives in Japan from Britain to race in MFG and search for his father. In a near future dominated by self-driving electric cars, the competition brings petrol-powered machines onto public roads. Kanata chooses a Toyota 86GT, relying on his driving skills against more powerful cars.

Kanata has graduated from a British racing school, so he arrives with training rather than learning from scratch. Getting ready for MFG introduces him to mechanic Ogata and the more experienced racer Aiba. That support network gives the opening a practical side: entering the competition involves people and preparation, as well as what Kanata can do behind the wheel.

Kanata’s first qualifying run moves between an uphill sector, a descent and a fog-covered stretch around Hakone’s abandoned town. The route gives his driving a changing set of conditions, while Ogata follows his progress and speaks to him over the radio. Concentration has a visible setting here: a familiar-looking road can disappear into mist, leaving the driver to carry on through a landscape that spectators cannot see clearly.
