An engineer and a samurai are stranded in America at the end of the nineteenth century. With no money for the journey home, Appare and Kosame enter a transcontinental race from Los Angeles to New York, using a steam-powered vehicle they build themselves.
The route brings more than rival drivers. The pair must protect their vehicle and themselves from outlaws and difficult terrain as they cross the continent. Appare’s engineering and Kosame’s swordsmanship give them different ways to face the same journey.
The field of drivers also includes Xialian, who has to fight the assumption that a woman cannot race. She asks a team owner to test her ability rather than accept that rule. Alongside Appare’s improvised route into the contest, her effort to obtain a seat makes access to the race a struggle in its own right.
