Wangan Midnight

湾岸ミッドナイト

Genres:Action
Akio looks ahead from the interior of a car at night.

Akio becomes attached to a heavily tuned Nissan Z with a dangerous reputation. On Tokyo’s expressways, the car draws him towards drivers who are equally absorbed by their machines, including a surgeon whose Porsche is known as the Blackbird.

The rivals do not all live as professional racers. The Blackbird’s driver, Tatsuya Shima, is a surgeon, while Reina Akikawa drives a Skyline GT-R and works as a model. Their separate lives converge around the pursuit of speed on the same roads.

The expressway brings these separate lives into the same narrow space. Akio’s blue Z appears beneath street lighting, its headlights almost level with the road, with another car following behind. The setting gives the machinery a different frame from a fenced circuit: these encounters belong to the city that the drivers return to after work and school.
