Asta wants to become Wizard King in a kingdom where magical ability and family background decide a person's opportunities. He cannot cast a spell, but gains a sword that cancels magic. His rivalry with Yuno and battles alongside the Black Bulls turn that unusual advantage into a team effort.
Noelle's defensive water magic gives her a task that Asta's sword cannot replace: keeping villagers safe while her teammates confront attackers. An early village mission makes teamwork a matter of dividing responsibilities, rather than simply adding more fighters. Protecting people and defeating the enemy are separate problems, which gives the Black Bulls more to do than cheer for Asta.
Finral can open passages to places he knows or can see, which often leaves him ferrying captain Yami around. He comes from a family known for offensive spatial magic, yet dislikes fighting and struggles with attack spells. Finding a role in the Black Bulls means putting that speciality to work without becoming the kind of fighter his family might expect.
