Whisper of the Heart

耳をすませば

Genres:Drama
Shizuku rests her cheek on her hand over a bowl and an open book.

Shizuku follows a mysterious cat and begins searching for a talent of her own. Seiji, a boy with a clear ambition, becomes part of that search. An antique cat figurine called the Baron opens a space where her everyday uncertainties and imagination can meet.

Seiji's determination gives Shizuku someone against whom to measure her own unsettled direction, while the Baron offers material for an imagined adventure. The film connects the question of what she can make with the more immediate experience of meeting someone whose dreams already have a shape.

A sheet of paper brings the question of talent into an ordinary shared moment. Shizuku and another girl study the page together outdoors, with none of the Baron's fantastical scenery around them. Making something can begin with words that another person can read, as well as with a private imagined adventure.
