Mononoke (2007 television series)

モノノ怪

The Medicine Seller holds his sword against a field of colourful umbrellas.

A travelling Medicine Seller confronts supernatural beings produced through human suffering and entanglement. His sword cannot simply cut down whatever appears. He must establish the being’s form, the truth of what happened and the human reason behind it before he can draw the weapon.

The required investigation gives the encounters a particular shape: a monster’s appearance is only part of the problem. The Medicine Seller needs people to reveal the circumstances and emotions they conceal. The twelve television episodes form five named cases, allowing each inquiry more space than a single encounter.

The first case starts with a pregnant traveller seeking shelter for the night. The innkeeper reluctantly gives her a room normally kept from guests, and a supernatural disturbance follows. A request for ordinary safety opens onto something the house has kept closed away, giving the Medicine Seller people to question as well as a being to confront.
