Horus pulls a blade from an ancient rock giant and learns that it is the Sword of the Sun. His journey leads towards people threatened by the Frost King Grunwald. Becoming a protector requires more than possessing a weapon whose full power has yet to be restored.

The sword must be reforged before its promise can be fulfilled. Horus also befriends Hilda, a girl whose songs and concealed history unsettle the villagers he helps. The struggle therefore includes gaining trust within a threatened community as well as opposing the force attacking it.

Horus travels with Coro, a small bear, on his way towards the village. That companionship keeps an animal world beside the threatened human community. The image of wolves crowding around his swinging weapon makes the journey physically precarious before a new home can offer any settled sense of safety.
