A condemned ninja and the executioner supervising him travel to a mysterious island to retrieve an immortality elixir, with a pardon and reunion hanging on his survival.
Gabimaru’s desire to see his wife again gives the mission a purpose beyond simply avoiding execution. Sagiri accompanies him under an arrangement that makes cooperation inseparable from coercion. Other prisoners want the same reward, while the island’s strange life makes its reputation as paradise increasingly difficult to trust.

Sagiri’s raised sword keeps the official threat in view before the island’s dangers take over. She is both a necessary travelling companion and the representative of the sentence Gabimaru hopes to escape. That tension gives the quest a second layer: finding a substance is only useful if the people assigned to reach it can survive one another and their surroundings.
