Fruits Basket (2019 adaptation)

フルーツバスケット

Tohru and members of the Sohma family gather on and around a staircase.

After her mother’s death, Tohru Honda lives in a tent until the Sohma family takes her in. Her new household has a secret: members of the family carry an animal transformation curse. Tohru becomes involved in relationships governed by rules that reach well beyond an unusual living arrangement.

The home she accepts is on land where she had been camping without knowing who owned it. Living with Yuki and Kyo therefore begins with a very practical need for shelter. Their family’s old bonds gradually make her position more complicated than that of a grateful house guest.

Tohru smiles with her eyes closed outside, yellow ribbons tied in her hair.

Tohru’s gentle manner is visible before the family’s larger history comes into view: a closed-eye smile, yellow hair ribbons and a school uniform place her firmly in an ordinary teenage world. That everyday presence matters beside a household whose private rules make even simple closeness difficult.
