Ponyo

崖の上のポニョ

Ponyo swims among small fish in blue water.

A young boy named Sosuke befriends Ponyo, a small fish who wants to become human. Her determination carries a magical disturbance from the sea into his coastal home. A child's friendship becomes inseparable from the changing waters around the town.

Ponyo's father is a sorcerer who wants to bring her back to the sea, while she creates trouble around Sosuke's home and wants a human life. Their friendship is pulled between those different wishes. The film places a fantastical family disagreement inside an ordinary clifftop household.

Beneath the sea, transparent globes, small craft and masses of fish turn the water into a crowded inhabited world. The clifftop home is only one side of the setting. Ponyo's wish crosses between places with very different scales and textures, bringing the busy undersea imagination towards Sosuke's recognisable household.
