My Neighbor Totoro

となりのトトロ

Genres:Fantasy
Satsuki carries Mei beside Totoro beneath umbrellas in the rain.

Satsuki and Mei move to the countryside near the hospital treating their mother. Exploring their new house and the woods brings them into contact with small creatures and the enormous forest spirit Totoro. The film follows the sisters' discoveries and family worries at an unhurried pace.

Totoro can be seen only by children, so the sisters discover a part of their new surroundings that adults cannot share in the same way. The creatures also include a bus shaped like a cat. A journey can therefore become another encounter with animal life, extending the girls' curiosity beyond the house and woods.

The practical side of the move matters too. Satsuki prepares packed lunches beside the stove, portioning rice and toppings into a row of wooden boxes. Pots, utensils and a basket crowd the kitchen around her. These domestic details give the sisters' new home a life beyond its mysterious inhabitants, with Satsuki taking an active part in looking after it.
