At 32, Kafka cleans up the monsters defeated by Japan's Defense Force while hoping to join it himself. A new chance to apply coincides with his ability to become a kaiju. Training, friendships and monster battles now depend on keeping that transformation hidden from the organisation he wants to serve.
Mina Ashiro is more than the commander Kafka hopes to serve under: she is the childhood friend who once shared his ambition. While he disposes of dead kaiju, she has become captain of the Third Division. His regret has a familiar face, making the application a chance to return to a promise as well as change careers.
Reno Ichikawa arrives as a younger colleague who still intends to apply to the Defense Force. Meeting him pushes Kafka to try again. Beginning their partnership among the cleanup crews gives the story two perspectives on the same ambition: a newcomer looking ahead and an older worker deciding whether he has really left it behind.
