Gon leaves his island home to become a Hunter like his father. Passing the Hunter Exam is his first route into that world. On the ship to the test, he meets Leorio and Kurapika, other applicants whose first encounter quickly turns into an argument.
Reaching the formal exam is already a selection process. On a supposed shortcut, Gon, Leorio and Kurapika encounter an elderly woman whose quiz can disqualify them before they reach the venue. Being a promising applicant is not enough if they misunderstand what a test is asking.
Inside the venue, the candidates include the skateboard-carrying Killua as well as unsettling veterans and strangers. The first formal test asks them to follow examiner Satotz to the next site without knowing how far they must run. The demand turns determination into something physical, while the crowd around Gon makes the exam a first meeting place as well as an obstacle.
