A teenager becomes involved with a self-styled shut-in detective and her irregular network of helpers, investigating cases that matter intensely to people overlooked by everyone else.

Alice works through computers from a crowded room, while Narumi and the others connect her deductions to the city outside. Their makeshift arrangements make the detective work a social relationship as well as a puzzle. Crime and vulnerable lives give the cases weight beyond the eccentric way the group presents itself.

Alice’s room gives the detective work an unusual centre. Information arrives on screens, but acting on it requires other people to go outside, ask questions and take risks. Narumi’s role connects that enclosed workspace to the people whose troubles reach it.
