Japanese exchange student Kazuya Kujo meets Victorique, a brilliant girl who spends her time among the books high in Saint Marguerite Academy’s library tower. She is waiting for something to interrupt her boredom. Kujo’s arrival brings company and a route into mysteries that extend well beyond the school’s corridors.
A police inspector’s request for advice about a fortune-teller’s murder starts an investigation that leads the pair toward a seemingly haunted ship. Tales that sound supernatural become problems Victorique wants to take apart. Kujo has to move through the danger surrounding those puzzles while learning how to work with someone whose deductions come much more easily than social contact.

Inspector Grevil de Blois stands in the foreground while the two students remain just behind him. His request has brought an official investigation into contact with Victorique’s private intelligence. The arrangement makes the library’s apparently isolated girl useful to people outside it, while Kujo gives her a companion for the part of a mystery that cannot be solved simply by staying among the shelves.
