In a city controlled by organised crime, Worick and Nicolas earn their living as handymen whose jobs range from deliveries and protection to killing.

The pair’s usefulness gives them dealings with both police and criminal organisations while they remain outside any single faction. Meeting Alex draws another life into their working arrangement. Ergastulum’s divisions between ordinary people and the superhuman Twilights make its violence more than a sequence of isolated contracts: employment, power and survival are tangled together.

A blonde man with an eye patch and cigarette raises one hand in a narrow street.
Negotiation and violence belong to the same working world for the handymen. © Kohske/SHINCHOSHA, GANGSTA. COMMITTEE Licensed by FUNimation® Productions, Ltd. All Rights Reserved.

Worick’s raised hand and cigarette make a quieter counterpoint to the blade in the action image. The handymen are people who negotiate as well as fight, moving through a city where almost any request can have a dangerous patron behind it. Their shared occupation is a way into Ergastulum’s hierarchy. The short television run is best approached as this released slice of that world, without treating its episode count as a promise that the larger story is finished.
