Re-l Mayer investigates a murder in Romd, a domed city where humans live alongside robots under close government control. An encounter with a strange being unsettles that managed world. Her search for an explanation leads toward the unknown beyond the city’s boundaries.

The first case includes AutoReiv robots infected by the Cogito virus and a creature escaping from a secret research facility. These are connected questions for an investigator, rather than a complete explanation handed to the audience. The city’s promise of control is tested by what its own institutions cannot account for.

Re-l’s report of the creature is dismissed as a hallucination, so investigating it also means defending her own account of what happened. Her professional position supplies access without guaranteeing that anyone will believe her. The case turns a city investigator into someone who must question the judgement of her own institutions.
