Kaiba

カイバ

A pale, green-haired figure turns to look over his shoulder.

In a world where memories can be stored, traded and moved between bodies, Kaiba wakes without any memory of his own. A pendant containing a woman's photograph is his only personal clue. Forced to flee, he travels between planets while trying to discover who he is.

The technology offers bodily survival to people who can afford it, but also makes memory theft and alteration possible. Kaiba's uncertainty therefore belongs to the social system around him as well as his private past. A new body cannot settle which experiences or attachments make someone the same person.

Even Kaiba's means of travelling puts the world's rules into practice. An early escape involves taking a simple hippo-shaped body and stowing away aboard a passenger ship. Bodily identity is therefore also a practical matter of transport, concealment and expense, well before his missing memories can be recovered.
