In a future society where humans possess telekinetic powers called Cantus, Saki and her friends enter the school that teaches them to use those abilities. Their education opens onto a hidden history, other intelligent beings and dangers that unsettle their understanding of the world.
The narrative follows the group at twelve, fourteen and twenty-six, allowing the same society to be encountered through childhood, adolescence and adulthood. School is therefore the beginning of a longer inquiry. The children's growing knowledge changes the scale of the questions they can ask about the order surrounding them.
At school, Cantus is trained through a ball tournament. Pupils steer a ball towards a goal while opponents try to obstruct it, turning an extraordinary ability into organised play. The exercise gives the children's power familiar rules, teams and competition before the society beyond their classroom becomes fully legible.
