Dororo (2019)

どろろ

Hyakkimaru stands against red with blades extending from his prosthetic arms.

Young thief Dororo travels through war-torn Japan with Hyakkimaru, a swordsman whose missing body parts were traded to demons by his father. Hyakkimaru fights those demons to recover what was taken. Their journey links violent supernatural encounters with the immediate problem of surviving as outsiders.

Hyakkimaru survived because a doctor fitted him with prosthetic limbs, which conceal blades. Recovering his body is therefore a concrete task as well as a reason to fight. Dororo joins a companion who can defend them but begins with very limited ways of sensing or communicating with the world.

Dororo’s broad grin and open face contrast with the armed, guarded figure of Hyakkimaru. The child brings a visibly different presence into the journey: mobile, expressive and ready to engage. Their companionship starts with unequal ways of facing the world, rather than two travellers who already understand one another.
