University student Naofumi is summoned to another world as its Shield Hero. His equipment is built around defence, and an early betrayal leaves him short of money, support and reputation. Protecting the world becomes entangled with finding a way to function in a society that rejects him.
Naofumi buys Raphtalia, an ill demi-human girl held in slavery, to fight on his behalf. He has lost the support and money that would make normal adventuring possible, while she has no freedom to choose her employer. Their partnership begins with that unequal dependence, rather than a voluntary meeting of heroes.
The sword, spear and bow beside Naofumi’s shield make the four heroes’ different roles visible from their first meeting. They arrive under a common title, but the story soon follows one man’s loss of the support that title promises. Fighting ability, recruitment and public trust become separate problems for him.
