Reki’s favourite place to skate is S, a secret race down an abandoned mine in Okinawa. Its dangerous head-to-head contests draw skaters with very different styles. His enthusiasm pulls newcomer Langa towards a world that operates well outside ordinary school sport.

Langa brings experience of snowboarding to a sport he has only just encountered. After his first contest at S, he asks Reki to teach him. Learning together makes the difference between their skills part of the friendship: one knows the local boards and racers, while the other adapts movements learned on snow.

S’s competitors also cultivate identities that reach beyond the boards they ride. Long pink hair, glasses and a pale robe give one skater a striking presence before the night-time crowd. Reki and Langa are entering a gathering with recognisable personalities and local rivalries, as well as a difficult course.
