Patema Inverted

サカサマのパテマ

Age holds on to upside-down Patema against a blue sky.

Patema leaves her underground home and discovers that the surface world's gravity pulls her towards the sky. Age, a boy whose feet stay on the ground, tries to help her. Their opposing gravities make holding on to each other a practical necessity in an adventure about trust and perspective.

Age's society teaches children to fear the sky and the people said to have fallen into it. He already slips away from his dormitory to look upward before he meets Patema. Helping her therefore challenges something he has been taught to accept, making their physical problem part of a conflict over who gets to describe the world.

Patema is an explorer before she meets Age. Her elders forbid the area she most wants to visit, yet no one explains what makes it dangerous. Her underground community wears protective suits and lives among tunnels and industrial structures, so the open sky brings a new kind of exposure to a girl used to walls and passageways.
