Nodame Cantabile

のだめカンタービレ

Genres:DramaRomance
Chiaki reacts with surprise in a stylised comic image.

Chiaki studies piano at a music university but wants to conduct. A fear of flying keeps him from pursuing the overseas training he imagines. Meeting Nodame, an unconventional pianist whose playing catches his ear, disrupts both his frustration with music and his orderly habits.

The clash extends to other students. A violinist rejects the emphasis on accuracy in classical music, and Chiaki refuses to accompany him in an exam because of his unconventional technique. The violinist turns to Nodame instead. Music college becomes a place where ideas about how to play have immediate consequences for who will work together.

Chiaki reacts to Nodame in a room crowded with bags and containers beside a piano.

Their differences have a physical address. Nodame’s room is crowded with bags, containers and piles of belongings around the piano, leaving Chiaki staring across a domestic landscape he can barely tolerate. Music has brought him to the door, but staying involved means encountering the untidiness that his first impression of her playing could not reveal.
