Natsume’s Book of Friends

夏目友人帳

Natsume carries a patterned cloth through a moonlit forest beside Nyanko-sensei.

Takashi Natsume can see spirits, an ability that has made ordinary friendships difficult. He inherits his grandmother Reiko’s Book of Friends, which binds the spirits whose names she collected. With Nyanko-sensei beside him, Natsume begins returning those names and meeting the people and spirits connected to them.

The spirits pursuing Natsume do not all understand who he is. Some mistake him for Reiko and demand that their names be returned. That inherited obligation sits alongside his attempt to protect the everyday life he now shares with people who care about him.

Nyanko-sensei’s small cat shape is only one side of his presence. The first episode also places Natsume beside the much larger Madara, with the boy dwarfed by white fur and red markings. The contrast gives his companion a scale quite different from an ordinary household pet.
