Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit

精霊の守り人

Balsa looks across a rocky landscape in an early Moribito episode.

Balsa, a travelling bodyguard, is hired to protect a prince carrying the egg of a water spirit. His own empire wants him dead. Keeping him alive requires spear fights, shelter, food and help from people who understand the spirit, making protection a continuing responsibility rather than a single rescue.

Balsa has vowed to save eight lives to atone for deaths in her past, and Chagum becomes the last life she needs to protect. That makes the job personal before the pursuit begins. Her strength with a spear is only one part of a promise that requires her to stay with a frightened child, not simply win a fight and leave.

Torogai runs forward along a forest path, carrying a long staff across her body.

Torogai investigates the egg inside Chagum and sends her findings to the court’s Master Star Reader. Balsa’s protection of the boy therefore has a counterpart in an argument over what he is carrying. Knowledge has to reach the people directing the pursuit, while Balsa tries to keep Chagum alive.
