Ganta and Isaki sit beneath a telescope and a star-filled sky.

Unable to sleep at night, Ganta Nakami discovers that the school observatory offers a place to rest. Isaki Magari has found the same refuge for the same reason. The two start sharing the abandoned room and a problem they cannot easily explain to their classmates.

Sent to fetch cardboard during preparations for the school festival, Ganta finds the observatory being used as a storeroom. Isaki is already making use of the abandoned space. Their meeting begins with an errand inside the busy school rather than a deliberate escape from the preparations.

The rumour attached to the observatory keeps other pupils away, but the refuge itself is makeshift: Isaki has even turned a discarded locker into a place to sleep. Light cuts across the two students in that cramped space. Rest begins here as something improvised inside the school day, before the room can become a shared project.
