Yukino has made herself the admired ideal of a model pupil, hiding how much effort and vanity support the performance. Arima's arrival at high school gives her a rival for first place and other people's praise. Discovering one another's private selves changes what that rivalry can become.
The achievement is real, but the untroubled perfection Yukino presents is a role. Competing with Arima forces her to think about why approval matters so much and whom she trusts with less flattering feelings. Their developing relationship makes the divide between school reputation and private life harder to keep intact.

The exaggerated expression and red background make a feeling conspicuous that Yukino normally keeps out of her school persona. Her problem is not a lack of ability: it is the distance between what she feels and what she wants other people to see. The comic distortion makes that distance part of how the anime presents her.
