Ayano Hanesaki has exceptional badminton ability and a strong reason to avoid using it. At Kitakomachi High School she encounters captain Nagisa Aragaki, whose relentless training has become inseparable from the memory of a crushing defeat. Their club’s ambition to reach the Inter-High tournament brings two very different relationships with the sport onto the same court.
Nagisa once lost to Ayano without scoring a point, and her slump has made her harsh with the people training beside her. Ayano’s arrival does not simply give the club another talented player; it returns an unresolved comparison to the room. A new coach and concerned teammates have to deal with how that frustration shapes practice.

Away from a rally, a conversation between schoolmates gives the club’s pressures another setting. Its players have classes, friendships and opinions about the people they practise with, and a captain’s frustration does not stop at the court boundary. The ordinary schoolroom matters because this team has to keep living together between the matches that make its conflicts most visible.
