Barakamon

ばらかもん

Handa stands beside the water in an open landscape.

Calligrapher Seishu Handa is sent to a remote island after punching an influential figure in his profession. He expects space to work, but the local children and their neighbours keep entering his life. His unfamiliar home becomes a place to reconsider both his writing and the way he treats people.

Handa’s rented house is already a secret base for Naru, an energetic first-year primary-school pupil. Even the retreat he hoped would let him work alone comes with visitors. His professional pride meets people who have little interest in observing the distance he tries to keep.

Naru leans over a wall and reaches down with one hand.

Naru does not wait to be formally invited into Handa’s world. Her first-episode image has her leaning over a wall, reaching into someone else’s space with an ease the guarded adult lacks. The island’s children turn entrances and boundaries into places for contact, even while he is trying to keep to himself.
