Ten-year-old Chiyo Mihama enters high school among classmates five years older than her. She joins a group whose very different habits make lessons, school events and ordinary conversations unpredictable. Their teacher Yukari is often as much a source of disorder as the pupils she is meant to manage.
The classmates are defined by different difficulties rather than a single shared ambition. Sakaki looks imposing but is timid and loves animals that do not return her affection. Chiyo’s academic ability, meanwhile, does not remove the awkwardness of being much younger than everyone around her.
A sunflower apron replaces Chiyo’s school uniform in the early kitchen scene. The pink, heart-patterned background and her large pigtails keep the image playful, giving the youngest pupil an ordinary domestic setting alongside the classroom group.
