The Wind Rises
風立ちぬ

Jiro dreams of flight but cannot become a pilot because of his eyesight. Inspired by aircraft designer Caproni, he turns towards designing aeroplanes. Hayao Miyazaki's film follows creative ambition through a turbulent historical world in which technical achievement cannot be separated from consequential choices.
The first constraint changes the form of Jiro's dream rather than removing it: he can make machines he cannot fly himself. Design becomes a vocation through which to pursue beauty. The story is a dramatised film, and its imaginative encounters should not be mistaken for documentary evidence about a historical person's life.

An imagined aircraft turns flight into a place people might inhabit: rooms, furniture and passengers gather beneath an enormous wing. The invention begins with a fanciful possibility rather than a finished engineering drawing. Those impossible proportions give the desire to design a visual life beyond the specifications of the aeroplanes Jiro will work on.
