Revolutionary Girl Utena

少女革命ウテナ

Genres:DramaFantasy
Pink-haired Utena looks ahead in a dark uniform.

Utena Tenjou becomes involved in a duel with student-council member Saionji and enters an extraordinary arena. There she meets Anthy Himemiya, the girl called the Rose Bride. School authority, ritual combat and the promise of revolution become entangled around their encounter.

The duelling system treats Anthy as somebody who can be won. Utena's encounter with her makes the meaning of a contest personal: the prize is another pupil, rather than a trophy that can be left in the arena.

The music brings a further collective voice into this highly ritualised school world. J. A. Seazer wrote the original choral pieces, with performances credited to the Suginami Children's Choir, Tokyo Philharmonic Chorus and Engeki Jikken Shitsu Ban'yū Inryoku. Alongside Shinkichi Mitsumune's score, this makes choral composition a distinct part of the production's musical identity.
