Shu meets a quiet girl named Lala-Ru during an otherwise ordinary day. A strange machine interrupts their encounter and carries them into a distant future where war has become everyday life. Helping a stranger places him inside a world organised around violence.
Their first meeting takes place high above a disused factory, where Shu keeps trying to talk even though Lala-Ru gives little away. When machinery comes for her, he tries to intervene with a stick. That small, impulsive act of protection is the doorway into the much harsher setting.
In Hellywood, Shu encounters boys serving as soldiers, including Nabuca and Boo. They are young people placed inside the military order he has stumbled into. Their presence makes the difference between his impulsive attempt to help and this world's organised use of children more concrete than the distant setting alone could do.
