Higurashi: When They Cry (original television anime)

ひぐらしのなく頃に

Rena smiles in her school uniform beside a wooden building.

Keiichi moves to rural Hinamizawa in the summer of 1983 and quickly finds friends at school. Their games and everyday company give the village an inviting surface. The annual Watanagashi festival brings a different discovery: a recurring pattern of deaths and disappearances.

His new circle includes helpful Rena, confident Mion, trap-loving Satoko and shrine daughter Rika. Knowing them makes the village's guarded history personal. Keiichi's curiosity about the festival changes how he reads behaviour that once seemed harmless, while the source of the violence stays concealed.

The warm evening setting can make a familiar figure difficult to read. Rena stands above Keiichi amid discarded objects, a cleaver visible beside her school uniform. The image brings an everyday tool and an apparently friendly face into an unsettling arrangement without identifying the source of the village's killings.
