A young manga artist's Christmas encounter and a would-be writer's fragile memory connect several romances in the town of Otowa.

Hiro's meeting with Miyako unsettles his childhood friend Kei, while Renji grows close to Chihiro, whose notebook helps her hold onto daily life. The parallel relationships make storytelling itself part of the premise: manga, film and a novel become ways to reach another person.

Chihiro's notebook gives the title's concern with memory a practical form. Renji cannot assume that a shared afternoon will remain available to her tomorrow; working on her novel creates a different way to build a connection. Elsewhere, Hiro's professional manga work and Kyosuke's interest in filming put other kinds of images between people who struggle to say what they want. Those linked creative pursuits distinguish the series from a single-couple courtship. The accompanying frame keeps the focus on Chihiro as a person, without treating her eyepatch as an explanation of her condition. Begin with memories.; melodies. is a later, separately titled instalment.
