Garlic Jr.'s men take Gohan because of the Dragon Ball he carries. Goku pursues them to rescue his son, while the search for the remaining balls gives the kidnappers a chance to demand immortality. A family rescue becomes entangled with an enemy whose grievance reaches back to Gohan's elders.

The film brings Goku and Piccolo into the same struggle despite their rivalry. Gohan is both the person they need to protect and a child whose potential the adults do not fully understand. This short theatrical story is separate from the later Garlic Jr. material within the Z television series.

Goku springs forward while a smaller green opponent tumbles away across the rocky setting. The difference in size does not make the encounter safe: the film's threat depends on what an enemy can obtain through the Dragon Balls as well as physical strength. Its rescue premise gives these confrontations an immediate purpose outside the contest itself.
