A camping trip is interrupted by Cooler, Frieza's brother, who has come to Earth to avenge his family. Goku and his companions face an opponent supported by his own armoured squadron. The attack turns a break from fighting into a struggle to keep an enemy's personal vendetta from destroying the planet.
Cooler's target is Goku, but the people around him also become exposed to the retaliation. The rescue and recovery efforts involve Gohan and Piccolo rather than leaving the confrontation to two isolated rivals. This first Cooler film is distinct from The Return of Cooler and its different central threat.
Gohan is wrapped in orange cloth with Piccolo close behind him. Their close placement brings the attack back to the people supporting Goku, away from the scale of the main duel. A campaign of revenge can put companions at risk even when its announced target is somebody else.
