Boogiepop Phantom

ブギーポップは笑わない Boogiepop Phantom

A short-haired school pupil looks down in profile in a shadowed setting.

Girls trade stories about Boogiepop, a mysterious figure said to kill people before their beauty fades. Around that urban legend, an ordinary-looking school world becomes a place where a familiar face may be connected to a danger nobody fully understands.

The licensed introduction connects Boogiepop to schoolgirl Touka Miyashita, describing a presence that emerges automatically when a crisis approaches. The contrast is between the rumour circulating among students and a protective response they cannot recognise. This is the 2000 Phantom anime, distinct from the later television adaptation.

One early story follows a boy who believes he can see insects inside other people's chests. What looks like help to him introduces another uncertainty: an apparently ordinary encounter may contain a private experience nobody else can verify. The school rumour is only one route into this world of incompatible perceptions.
