Angel’s Egg

天使のたまご

Genres:Fantasy
A pale-haired traveller carries a cross-shaped weapon before a luminous orb.

A girl carries an egg through a city partly submerged in water, believing that an angel waits inside. A boy searching for a bird from his dreams joins her. As they explore the ruins, his curiosity about the egg puts their fragile new friendship under pressure.

The film brings together Mamoru Oshii's writing and direction with Yoshitaka Amano's ink-painting style. Their hand-drawn fantasy connects questions of faith with the shapes and textures of its imagined world. The collaboration offers a way into the film through its images, alongside the uncertainty surrounding the girl and the egg.

The two travellers carry very different objects through the same ruined world. The girl protects an egg, while the boy bears a long, cross-shaped weapon. A scene places the egg in his hands as she watches, their small figures surrounded by worn stone and a dark doorway. The fragile object gives their encounter a visible point of tension, leaving his intentions and the meaning of their new companionship uncertain.
