Rintaro argues that animation needs space for creative risk alongside familiar successes, in a Cartoon Brew interview by Kambole Campbell published on 28 October. The conversation took place at the Busan International Film Festival, in a roundtable shared with a Cine21 journalist.
His criticism leaves room for remakes. He recognises their commercial appeal and does not dismiss returning to older work; his concern is whether safer projects crowd out the experiments that could shape animation’s future. He also describes a cautious approach to AI, rather than offering an unconditional endorsement of its use.
That argument comes from a filmmaker whose own work revisits earlier creations. Sony’s official Metropolis page credits Rintaro as director, Katsuhiro Otomo as screenwriter and Osamu Tezuka’s comic as the source. Adaptation and invention are not mutually exclusive in that example.
Busan’s official programme scheduled his masterclass for 10 October. The newly published interview offers his perspective on the industry; it does not announce a film, remake or production-policy change. Read Campbell’s full interview at Cartoon Brew.
