Renton longs for a life beyond his provincial home. When Eureka arrives with the machine Nirvash needing repairs from his grandfather, a distant ideal becomes someone standing in front of him. The military pursuit following her draws his household into a much larger conflict.

The encounter begins with maintenance, not a planned heroic recruitment: Eureka needs a working machine and has come to Renton's grandfather for help. Renton's desire to leave therefore meets other people's immediate needs. The original television story follows that meeting, separate from the film versions that rework its characters and circumstances.

Renton's first response to the pursuit is also physical: he takes to the air on a board to protect Eureka. His grandfather's Amita Drive links that impulsive action back to the workshop. The huge machine and the boy's much smaller means of flight belong to the same urgent encounter.
