Wrongfully sentenced to death, a schoolboy enters a privately run prison where prisoners’ dangerous contests become entertainment for paying visitors.

Ganta’s wish to confront the person responsible for his conviction begins inside an institution controlling his body and his chances of survival. Meeting his childhood friend Shiro complicates that unfamiliar world, while discovering an unusual ability draws him toward other inmates with powers. The premise combines a personal grievance with an organised system of punishment and spectacle.

The balloons and cheerful mascot show the prison’s public face. Ganta’s cuffs and frightened expression belong to the life concealed behind that attraction. Placing the two images together makes the premise’s contradiction visible: what looks like leisure to one group depends on coercion for another. The short television run covers this particular adaptation without promising completion of the manga.
