Makoto Naegi wins a place at Hope’s Peak Academy by lottery, joining classmates selected for exceptional talents. Instead of beginning an elite education, he wakes inside a sealed school. The bear-like headmaster Monokuma announces a way to graduate: kill another student and avoid being identified as the culprit.
After a murder, the survivors have to examine evidence and argue through a class trial. A wrong verdict will punish the innocent and let the killer leave. Every conversation therefore serves two needs that do not sit comfortably together: finding allies in a frightening place and deciding whether those allies are telling the truth.

The school’s impressive students arrive with titles that promise distinction, but those credentials do not establish who can be trusted. An emphatic speaker in a spotless uniform may project certainty without settling an argument. The group has to turn claims into evidence while Monokuma controls the rules, making the performance of confidence different from the work of reaching a defensible conclusion.
