A nameless soul is offered another chance at life in the body of Makoto, a schoolboy who has died by suicide. Guided by Purapura, it must live among people who knew the boy. Returning to earth means entering a family and school history it does not understand.
The second chance comes with a condition: the soul is told it committed a serious wrong before death. Makoto’s body gives it a place in the world, but does not immediately explain either its own past or the boy’s circumstances. Ordinary encounters become part of working out what happened.

The promotional image sets a small schoolboy in a dark uniform amid a tall band of scattered colour, beside the film’s large title. He has a visible face, but the artwork gives no account of the life other people recognise as Makoto’s. That everyday appearance sits beside the soul’s uncertainty: looking like the boy does not supply an understanding of his family, school or past.
