A debt-ridden devil hunter makes a contract with his chainsaw devil companion and returns from death with a transformed body and a precarious chance at ordinary comforts.
Denji’s starting ambitions are small because poverty has left him with so little. The extraordinary violence of his new abilities does not instantly make him good at understanding the people offering a different life. Supernatural contracts and everyday wants stay close together, making a meal or a place to sleep matter alongside the next confrontation.

Denji’s exhausted face in the vehicle contrasts with the violent transformed figure in the identification artwork. The gap is useful: spectacular power belongs to someone whose needs and experience remain painfully limited. The first television series introduces that bargain without completing the manga. Expect extreme physical violence to sit beside awkward humour and an unusually material sense of what a better life might mean.
