After being dismissed from the Hero’s party, Gideon adopts the name Red and moves to Zoltan, hoping to open a herb shop. The change of livelihood gives him another way to use what he knows. Rit, a princess and former companion, arrives with a proposal to work and live alongside him.
The Divine Blessings give people abilities associated with particular roles, including Red’s role as Guide to the Hero. His attempt to build another life asks what somebody can do after that assigned work no longer supplies a place for them. A local child’s illness makes knowledge of herbs immediately useful, while Rit’s arrival gives the shop a relationship to develop alongside its business. The world’s violence and former obligations remain capable of reaching the quieter town.

The old party remains present in the contrast between this night-time confrontation and Red’s errands in Zoltan. One life measures him by his usefulness to a quest; the other has immediate, local needs, such as a sick child and a shop to keep running. The smaller setting gives his knowledge a purpose without making the larger world harmless.
