Seventeen-year-old Akira Tachibana has stopped running after an injury and works part time at a family restaurant. She develops feelings for its manager, Masami Kondo, a divorced father of forty-five who has put aside his own hope of becoming a writer. Their meeting brings two interrupted ambitions into the same small workplace.

Akira’s apparent severity initially convinces Kondo that she dislikes him. Her attraction makes that misunderstanding more consequential, while her distance from the track team and her friend Haruka shows what has narrowed in her life. The age difference and his position as her manager are part of the situation, alongside the question of what each has given up.

Kondo lies back outdoors with a flushed, startled expression.

Kondo is introduced through everyday failures of authority: employees do not take him seriously, and customer complaints leave him apologising. The flustered manager in this frame is far from the image of an assured older romantic lead. Akira’s attention falls on someone who also feels stalled, making the restaurant a place where her reading of another person differs sharply from his reading of himself.
